Claim 20% back on dental treatment in Turkey
If you live in Ireland and pay Irish tax, you can claim tax relief on non-routine dental treatment even when it is carried out abroad. The relief is given at the standard rate of 20% and there is no upper limit on the dental amount you can claim. So if you spend €4,000 on implants in Fethiye, you may be able to claim around €800 back through your Irish tax return.
What is the Med 2 form?
The Med 2 is a receipt for your dental expenses, completed and signed by your dentist. It is not the claim form. You keep the Med 2 in your records — you do not post it to Revenue, but you should be able to provide it (for example, upload an image) when you make your claim, and keep it for six years.
How much can you claim?
Relief is 20% of the cost of qualifying non-routine treatment. There is no monetary cap on the dental expense itself. You can claim for the current year and the previous four tax years, so older treatment may still qualify.
Which treatments qualify?
Qualifying non-routine dental treatment includes:
- Implants (including bone grafting and bone augmentation)
- Crowns and veneers (and Rembrandt-type etched fillings)
- Bridgework and inlays
- Endodontics (root canal treatment)
- Orthodontic treatment
- Periodontal treatment for gum disease
- Surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth
- Gold or fibreglass posts, chrome cobalt splints
Which treatments do NOT qualify?
Routine treatment is excluded: fillings, scaling or cleaning, tooth extraction (non-surgical), and providing or repairing dentures or artificial teeth.
Does treatment in Turkey qualify?
Yes. Revenue allows relief on non-routine treatment performed outside Ireland, provided the dentist is a qualified practitioner under that country's laws. Our dentists are registered with the Turkish Dental Association (TDB), and your invoice shows the registration details required to support a Med 2 claim.
How to claim — step by step
- Complete your treatment and ask us for your Med 2-standard invoice and the completed Med 2 receipt.
- Keep your receipts (and the Med 2) in your records.
- Sign in to Revenue myAccount and add your dental cost under Health Expenses → Non-Routine (or use the Real-Time Credit facility).
- Claim the relief on your income tax return; keep documents for six years in case Revenue asks to see them.
What Smile & Holiday provides
We issue a detailed, Med 2-standard invoice: clinic details, TDB registration number, the dentist's name and signature, an itemised treatment classification and the amount in euros with the date — exactly the record that supports your claim.
Important — this is general information, not tax advice
This page explains how Med 2 dental relief generally works for patients travelling from Ireland. It is not tax advice and does not guarantee any specific refund, which depends on your personal tax position and the current rules. Please confirm the details on the official Revenue.ie dental expenses page or with your tax adviser. See also our Ireland vs Turkey cost comparison.
