Not enough bone rarely ends implant plans. A sinus lift (โฌ250โ600 per side) or bone graft (โฌ150โ400) rebuilds the missing volume, and graft-free options (short, tilted, zygomatic implants) may avoid it. A CBCT scan sets the plan; success rates are ~95%+, with 4โ9 months of healing for major grafts.
If a dentist has told you there is "not enough bone for dental implants," it can feel like the door has closed. In reality, insufficient bone is one of the most common and most solvable situations in modern implantology. Techniques such as a sinus lift and bone grafting rebuild the missing volume, and a sinus lift in Turkey typically costs a fraction of the UK or German price. This guide explains why the jawbone shrinks, how we measure it, which procedures restore it, and what the whole journey costs and involves.
Your jawbone needs the daily stimulation of chewing to stay dense. When a tooth is lost, the bone that once held its root no longer receives that pressure and gradually resorbs โ a process called alveolar resorption. Up to a quarter of the width can disappear in the first year alone. Long-standing gaps, untreated periodontitis (gum disease), and years of wearing removable dentures all accelerate this shrinkage, leaving too little height or width to anchor an implant securely.
In the upper back jaw there is an added factor: the maxillary sinus, an air-filled cavity above the molars, tends to expand downward as the bone below it thins. This is exactly the area a sinus lift is designed to address.
Guesswork has no place here. At your consultation we take a 3D CBCT scan (cone-beam computed tomography), which shows the exact height, width, and density of bone at every potential implant site, plus the position of the sinus and nerves. From this scan we can tell โ before you commit to anything โ whether you need grafting, how much, and whether the implant can be placed at the same time. You can send a panoramic X-ray in advance through our free consultation, and we confirm the plan with a CBCT on arrival.
A sinus lift raises the sinus membrane and adds bone graft beneath it to create height for upper molars and premolars. The closed (crestal) technique works through the implant channel itself, suits smaller lifts of 2โ4 mm, and often allows the implant to be placed the same day. The open (lateral window) technique accesses the sinus from the side of the jaw and is used when more height is needed; healing usually precedes implant placement.
Grafting adds material that your body gradually replaces with its own bone. The main options are:
Autograft โ your own bone, taken from another site; the gold standard for healing.
Xenograft โ processed bovine mineral such as Bio-Oss, a very common and predictable choice.
Alloplast โ synthetic biocompatible material, useful when a second donor site is not wanted.
When the ridge is too thin (narrow) rather than too short, ridge augmentation widens it โ often with a graft and a protective membrane โ so an implant of the correct diameter can be placed.
Not every case needs rebuilding. Depending on your CBCT we may recommend:
Short implants that fit the available height without a sinus lift.
Tilted All-on-4 implants angled to use the denser bone you still have.
Zygomatic implants anchored in the cheekbone for severe upper-jaw loss โ a specialist solution that can avoid extensive grafting.
For a full arch, our dental implants planning always tests these graft-avoiding routes first.
Minor grafts placed at the same time as an implant add little to the overall schedule. Larger, standalone grafts or open sinus lifts need 4โ9 months to mature before implants are loaded. Where bone quality allows, we place the implant simultaneously with the graft, which spares you an extra surgical trip. Your exact timeline is set by the CBCT, not by a fixed rule.
Rebuilding bone in Turkey is dramatically more affordable than at home. As a guide for 2026:
Sinus lift: โฌ250โ600 per side
Bone graft: โฌ150โ400 per site
By comparison, a sinus lift in the UK commonly runs ยฃ800โ2,500. These procedures are added to the cost of the implants themselves, and even with flights and a hotel the combined total remains well below home-country prices.
If your bone allows simultaneous placement, a single trip can cover graft and implant together. If a major graft is needed first, we plan two visits: a shorter graft trip, then a return several months later for the implants and crowns. We coordinate the interval so your travel is efficient and your healing is never rushed.
Sinus lifts and bone grafts are well-established procedures with success rates commonly cited around 95% or higher. To protect a sinus lift, you must not blow your nose forcefully, sneeze with a closed mouth, or use a straw for the first two weeks, and flying should follow your surgeon's guidance โ usually a 72-hour wait after a graft or sinus lift. Mild swelling and bruising are normal; we provide medication and written aftercare before you travel.
We assess every bone case in-house with on-site CBCT imaging, so your plan is based on your anatomy, not an estimate. Grafting and sinus procedures are performed by Dr. Mustafa Besli, DDS, with more than 15 years of implantology experience. From the first scan to the final crown, one team manages your treatment and your trip.
"Not enough bone" is rarely the end of the story. With a sinus lift, bone grafting, or a graft-avoiding implant design, most patients who were turned away elsewhere can still achieve fixed, natural-looking teeth. Send us your X-ray through our free consultation and we will tell you exactly what your case needs.
