Apply ice and eat soft foods for the first 24 hours after implant surgery. Avoid physical activity during week one. Return to normal eating within 2-4 weeks. Long-term, brush twice daily and attend regular check-ups. Smile & Holiday provides ongoing WhatsApp support.
Your dental implant surgery has been completed successfully. Now one of the most important phases begins: the recovery process. The first 24 hours are critical for the long-term success of your implant.
Immediately after surgery, a gauze pad will be placed over the surgical site for you to bite down on gently. Keep this in place for 30-45 minutes. Slight bleeding during the first few hours is normal. Apply ice to the outside of your face, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. This will minimise swelling.
What to do on day one:
Take all prescribed medications on schedule
Rest with your head elevated
Drink plenty of water but do not use a straw (the suction can disturb the stitches)
Eat only soft, lukewarm foods
Do not disturb the surgical site with your tongue or fingers
During the first week, your body is actively healing. Swelling typically peaks on days 2-3 and then begins to subside. This is entirely normal and not a cause for concern.
Follow these guidelines throughout week one:
Absolutely no smoking or alcohol
Avoid heavy exercise and strenuous physical activity
Do not chew on the surgery side
Gently rinse with warm salt water 2-3 times per day
Continue brushing your other teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush
The Smile & Holiday team will stay in touch via WhatsApp during this period, monitoring your recovery closely and answering any questions you may have.

During this phase, you will notice significant improvement. Swelling and bruising should have largely resolved. You can gradually return to your normal routine.
Key points for this period:
Gradually transition to semi-solid foods
Begin flossing when your dentist gives the go-ahead
Light exercise can be resumed
Some sensitivity around the implant site is normal
Your dental implant requires the same care as your natural teeth. With proper maintenance, implants can last 20 years or more. Adopt these habits for long-term success:
Brush at least twice daily with a soft-bristled brush
Floss every day, paying special attention to the area around the implant
Use an antibacterial mouthwash
Have professional dental cleanings at least twice a year
If you grind your teeth, ensure you use a night guard
Eat: Soup, yoghurt, pudding, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soft-boiled eggs, avocado
Avoid: Hard foods, crunchy snacks, spicy dishes, very hot or cold beverages

Eat: Pasta, soft-cooked vegetables, fish, rice, soft bread
Avoid: Nuts, hard candy, caramel, chewing gum, ice chewing
You can comfortably eat most foods. However, until the permanent crown is placed on your implant, avoid using your teeth to crack very hard items such as nutshells.
Reach out to your dentist immediately if you experience any of the following:
Excessive swelling: Still increasing after day 4-5
Persistent pain: Continues beyond 7 days despite painkillers
Fever: Temperature above 38°C (100.4°F)
Bleeding: Active bleeding persists after 24 hours
Numbness: Numbness in the lower jaw that has not resolved after several days
Implant looseness: The implant or healing cap feels loose
At Smile & Holiday, you can reach us 24/7 through our WhatsApp support line. We provide priority emergency appointments at our clinic in Fethiye.
The success of your implant treatment depends on regular follow-up appointments. A typical follow-up schedule looks like this:
Week 1: Suture check and removal if necessary
Month 1: Healing assessment and X-ray review
Month 3: Osseointegration evaluation
Months 4-6: Transition to the prosthetic phase (permanent crown or bridge)
Twice yearly: Routine check-up and professional cleaning
For our international patients, we conduct some follow-up appointments online. When you need to return to Fethiye, we assist with your travel planning to make the process as smooth as possible.
